Life in the Lower Mainland.
The reason families never go back.
British Columbia's most liveable region. Mountains, ocean, world-class schools, four real seasons, diverse communities, and a healthcare system where GPs are genuinely valued — all within a 30-minute commute of where you'll work.
The outdoor lifestyle is not a cliché
Mountains are 90 minutes away. Beaches and trails are closer than most UK cities' commutes into work. BC's Pacific climate means mild winters – a few days of snow at most.
Three world-class ski resorts (Whistler-Blackcomb, Cypress, Grouse), endless hiking through Pacific Spirit and Lynn Canyon, kayaking from Deep Cove, and salmon runs on the Capilano River — all within an hour of where you'll practise.
Schools your children will thrive in
BC has one of the strongest public school systems in North America — consistently ranked in the global top 10 by PISA. Surrey, Langley, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge school districts are widely chosen by relocating physician families.
Private and Independent options are accessible at GP income levels: Southridge School (Surrey), Pacific Academy, Meadowridge School (IB World School), St. George's, and Crofton House (Vancouver) are all popular with our doctor community.
University-bound? UBC, SFU, and UVic are all within commute. Tuition for citizens/PRs is roughly a tenth of UK international rates.
What your Saturdays actually look like
A different rhythm. More space, more light, more time outside. Most of our UK doctors say the lifestyle shift hit harder than the salary.

Sports, culture, and weekends that don't repeat
Three pro sports teams — Vancouver Canucks (NHL), BC Lions (CFL), Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS). The PNE summer fair, VanDusen Botanical Garden light festival at Christmas, the Celebration of Light fireworks every July.
Music: Rogers Arena hosts every world tour. Theatre: The Cultch and Arts Club. Food: Richmond's night markets are the closest thing to Hong Kong outside Asia.
The most diverse food scene in Canada
Surrey has the largest South Asian population outside India. Richmond's Aberdeen Centre is genuinely the best Chinese food in North America. Commercial Drive for Italian, Main Street for the new wave, Yaletown for date nights.
There are over 250 languages spoken across Greater Vancouver. Your kids will grow up multilingual whether you plan it or not.
Long weekends, even better
Three statutory long weekends per year on top of personal time — and BC's geography means each one can be a different world.
The cost of living question
The Lower Mainland is not cheap. We are honest about that. But a GP earning CAD $400,000–$600,000 is in the top 1% of income earners locally. The numbers work.
Surrey, Langley, and Maple Ridge offer significantly more space and value than central Vancouver — proper detached houses with gardens for what a London flat costs. Most of our clinics are in these communities.
Quiet streets. Space. A different pace.
Surrey, Langley, and Maple Ridge offer something most UK doctors are not expecting: space. Proper detached houses with gardens, quiet residential streets, and tall Douglas fir trees lining every road.
Many UK doctors comment that the neighbourhoods here feel both newer and more peaceful than what they left behind. The pace changes when you live outside central Vancouver.
